Cookie Wisdom

In lieu of cookie wisdom this time, I'd like to comment on the whole Cookie Monster fiasco.

So, Cookie Monster is going to stop singing his "C is for Cookie" song and sing about how cookies are a "sometimes" food?

Okay, too many cookies may be bad for us humans, but from a veterinary perspective, I appreciate species differences. My question is: where's the literature that says that cookies are bad food for monsters? For all we know, cookies are the perfect health food for them. Their physiology is no doubt vastly different from ours, so why do we assume what's bad for us is bad for them?

Oh well. It's the end of an era.

. . . and I was keeping up so well!

I was posting to this thing pretty regulary for a while, but now I may have matched my summer record for a blogging dry spell.

I've still been pondering and been playing around out and about, but as soon as I get a changce to sit down, there's work to do and stuff to read or study. And there's always the sleeeping, bathing and eating. (I swear--sometimes life gets in the way of life.)

It's not that this semester is full of hard classes, just a lot of classes. And with trying to keep up with a job and maintain an occasion personal life, it's hard to find time to put my experinces and thoughts online.

So, here are the short forms of blogs I would have posted:

--The whole euthanasia/value of life controversy and how recent court rulings about "life's value" can affect pet owners: couldn't write a pet column about it--too touchy--but I will later post the would-be column on this

--Star Wars III: coming soon--no interest in seeing bad acting but very interested in seeing Wookiee home planet and badass Yoda fighting future emperor

--The "remote drug delivery systems" (aka tranquilizer darting) lab at the Brookfield Zoo: got to learn more pharmacology and got in some target practice with dart rifles and handguns

--Why I don't post many pictures of myself online: past stalkers and guy who works in building who knew stuff about me before I even knew who he was, and who prints leggy photos of 13-year-old Asian girls after hours

--The annual UI Vetscapades: found out that some professors drive shittier cars than mine--woo hoo!

--My summer plans: keep working for public engagement/Dean's office, hopefully work on research project with Chicago Zoological Society if funding comes through (turned in proposal yesterday)

--Clinics and rounds: realized some stuff I've learned this year IS useful and maybe all the sitting on my ass 8 hours a day in dark lecture hall may someday pay off

--My recent epiphany about garderners, postal carriers, cab drivers, waitresses and hairdressers: They're far wiser and smarter than doctors, lawyers and CEOs

That's all for now. Time to review more Clinical Pathology--

No time to blog. . .

but I will anyway.

Fell asleep in the atrium of the basic science building today. Best nap I've had in weeks. I think I'm going to come in here after hours one night and steal one of the couches. . .they're ugly, but firm with just the right amount of give. Must be thr high-quality foam in the cushions. No pressure points!

Yes, my brain is mush.

How I feel after this week:

Last's week's Clinical Pathology Quiz: Yay! Finally did well on one of those. We have them every other week, and for some reason I ususally make stupid mistakes on them.

Open house: Tiring, but fun. There are some frickin adorable kids out there! Ralph, the 6-ft dog, grabbed my thigh. I don't know why--maybe it was hot in that costume and he just needed to rest his paw. I learned how to paint pretty horsie faces in under two minutes!

Pharmacology exam: Ugh. That was the general consensus.

Virology Exam: Pretty good, but still annoyed that I got a lousy grade on that quiz three weeks ago and our group lab project. For some reson, I do really well on the exams but just so-so on the little assignments.

Summer stuff: Getting ready to present last summer's research at a few parasitology confererences, attending a meeting Tuesday to request funding for travel expenses for this.

Talked to Dr. Langan from Brookfield Zoo to put together a research project for this summer. She'll have more details for me Monday.

Got an email from the USDA folks about the Cornell/Plum Island training trip. It's confirmed--I have to disrobe in a "group setting" during de-contamination. I never was much of an exhibitionist, but maybe I'll find it's not so bad.

And the upcoming week:

Tomorrow I get a study break to attend a four-hour awards ceremony and get stuffed with hors d'oeuvres. I think I'll bring my class notes with me just in case. . .and this means I have to wear nice clothes and wash my face. Oh well.

Endocrinology exam Monday: Hmmmmm. Seems like straightforward stuff, but if I recall a conversation I had with Dr. Graves this time last year, he said his exam "pissed off" many students. I think he thinks, or knows, his exams are hard. We'll see.

Special Pathology exam Tuesday night: I'm just not sure where to make room in my brain for the morpholigic diagnoses, etiologies and pathophysiologies for the 300 diseases that could possibly be on this exam. Exams like this are the reason I constantly forget where I've left my keys, my phone, my mug and my pants--no room for such trivial information in my brain! I can always get new pants!

Another Clinical Pathology quiz Thursday: I think I'll be okay. Just got to put the time into studying.

The pants outlook: Although I appreciate my acquisition of a "juicier" bottom, I am once again annoyed with the pinching of the fat belly by my pants when I sit down. I don't want to buy new spring pants, and I don't want to bother losing the weight, either. So I'm pulling my stockpile of muu-muu's out of storage.
